A shout out to the Guadeloupe Rotarians

We want to send a special thanks to Guadeloupe Assistant Governor Fritz Grenon for his assistance Sunday night during our transit of Port de Pitre airport en route from Dominica to Martinique.

Why fly north from Dominica to go south to Martinique? Although on a clear day at Scott Head in Dominica, you can see the northern tip of Martinique, you cannot fly there directly – you must fly somewhere else that has connections with Martinique. For us, that was Guadeloupe.

To make the Dominica-Guadeloupe-Martinique trip, you must use two airlines – LIAT (which we have come to learn means “leave island any time”) to Guadeloupe and then Air Caraibes to Fort de France, Martinique.

It gets better. The two airlines do not have an interline agreement, so we had to check our rather large amount of baggage to Guadeloupe, retrieve it at Guadeloupe airport, go through immigration and customs, exit into Guadeloupe, re-enter the airport and check in with Air Caraibes, check our bags in, and go through immigration and security again.

When we exited from customs in Guadeloupe, standing there was AG Fritz, the Rotary logo on his shirt matching that of team leader Rick Francona. Fritz assisted and guided us through the airport and facilitated the whole re-check in process.

We wanted to present Fritz with a small token of thanks for his help. We could tell you that since we were in an airport and team member Heidi Ellis is sponsored by Eugene Airport Rotary, we opted to have her present him with a club banner. In reality, it turns out that Heidi was the only one that thought to pack a banner in her carry on….

Guadeloupe Rotarians – thanks!
